Translation

It is narrated by Imam Bukhari as: “A man from Najd with unkempt hair came to Allah’s Messenger and we heard his loud voice but could not understand what he was saying, till he came near (and then we came to know) that he was asking about Islam. Allah’s Messenger said. “You must perform five Salaat (prayers) in a day and night (24 hours).” The man asked, “Are there any other (more) Salãt (prayers) upon me?’ Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, but if you want to perform the Unobligatory Nawafil Salät (you can) .” Allah’s Messenger further said to him: “You must observe Fasts (according to Islamic teachings)] during the month of Ramadaan.” The man asked, “Are there any other (more) fastings upon me?” Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, but if you want to observe the Unobligatory nawafil fasts (you can). Then Allah’s Messenger further said to him, “You must pay the Zakat.” The man asked, “Is there any thing other than the Zakat for me to pay?” Allah’s Messenger replied, “No, unless you want to give alms by your own.” And then that man retreated saying, “By Allah! I will neither do less nor more than this.” Allah’s Messenger said, “If what he said is true, then he will be successful (i.e. he will be granted Paradise).”

Explanation

Meaning of some words

Najd is the raised plateau or region from Tihamah (A geographically isolated region of the Arabian peninsula) to Iraq. Its literal meaning is: The raised area or highland.

Answers to some objections, especially the answer to this argument that the Prophet have informed about the success of the questioner, even though he did not confess to abstaining from the forbidden.

Some people might have a objection on this hadith that the person had asked a question about Islam, So, the answer should have been about Tawheed and Prophethood instead of saying about prayer, fasting and zakat. There are two answers to this.

The question was, in fact, about the duties of Islam. Then there will be an objection that the Prophet did not mention about Hajj. The answer is that Hajj was not obligatory till then. The Prophet might have already told him earlier about witnessing Tawheed and Prophethood, but Talha (May ALLAH be pleased with) could not hear him as he was far away.

The man said, “I will not increase it.” It might be objected that there is denial of Nawafil (Voluntary Good deeds). The answer is that he meant that I will not increase over these obligatory duties, that is, I will not perform 6 farz instead of 5 farz.

It can also be objected to this hadith as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said about this person, “If he told the truth, then he succeeded”. Even though he had said about performing the obligatory duties and not said to abstain from forbidden (haram) deeds, how can he be successful without it? The answer is that the hadith is also recorded in 6956 at the end of Sahih Bukhari. This is the sentence in it. “So the Messenger of Allah informed him of the Sharaa e Islam. And all the duties, obligations and all the forbiddens are included in Sharaa e Islam. Then the man said: I will not increase or decrease over these obligations. Then the Messenger of Allah said: If this person told the truth, then he is successful. And it is clear that whoever fulfills all his obligational duties, and avoids all the prohibitions, he will be successful i.e,. he will be in Paradise.

Tarjuma

Imam Bukhari riwayat karte hain, hamein Ismaeel ne hadith bayan ki, inhone kaha hamein Imam Malik bin Anas ne hadith bayan ki apne chacha Abu Sohail bin Malik apne walid se keh inhone Hazrat Talha bin U’baidullah ko yeh kehte huwe suna hai keh Ahl e Najad mein se ek shaks RasoolALLAH (sallallahu a’laihi wa sallam) ke paas aaya, uske sar ke baal bhikrey huwe the. Hum uski aawaaz ki gungunahat sun rahe the aur uski baat samajh nahi rahe the hatta keh woh qareeb huwa toh woh Islam ke mutalliq suwal kar raha tha. Toh RasoolALLAH (sallallahu a’laihi wa sallam) ne farmaya, din aur raat mein 5 namazein hain. Usne kaha, kya unke alawa kuch aur bhi hain? Aapne farmaya nahi magar tum chaho toh nafal padho. RasoolALLAH ne farmaya, Aur Ramazan ke rozey. Usne kaha, kya inke alawa kuch aur rozey bhi mere zimmey hain? Aap ne farmaya nahi. Magar yeh keh tum chaho toh nafali rozey rakho. Hazrat Talha ne kaha: Aur RasoolALLAH () ne ussey zakat ka zikr kiya. Usne kaha, kya zakat ke alawa aur bhi kuch dena mere zimmey farz hai? Nahi lekin agar tum chaho toh nafali sadaqa do. Woh shaks yeh kehte huwe peeth modkar chala gaya, ALLAH ki qasam, mai in faraiz par kuch zyada karunga na kam karunga. RasoolALLAH ne farmaya, agar usne sach kaha hai toh yeh kamyab hogaya.

Tafsir

Baaz alfaz ke maana

Najd” sar zameen e Tihaamah se lekar Arz e Iraq tak jo buland jagah hai, woh najad hai. Iska lughwi maana hai: zameen ki buland jagah.

Baaz aitraazaat ke jawabat , khususan is ashkaal ka jawab keh aap ne us saayil ki kamyabi ki khabar di, halanke usne muharrimaat se ijtinab ka iqrar nahi kiya tha?

Is hadith par yeh aitraaz hota hai keh us shaks ne Islam ke mutalliq suwal kiya toh aap ko ba zahir chahiye tha keh aap usko tauheed aur risalat ke mutalliq batate, aap ne usko namaz, rozey aur zakat ke mutalliq bataya, toh yeh jawab suwal ke mutabiq nahi. Iske do jawabaat hain.

Uska suwal dar haqeeqat faraiz e Islam ke mutalliq tha. Phir aitraaz hoga keh aap ne Haj ka zikr nahi kiya, iska jawab yeh hai keh us waqt tak haj farz nahi huwa tha. Mumkin hai pehle aapne usko tauheed wa risalat ki gawahi dene ke mutalliq bataya ho, lekin Hazrat Talha faasley par hone ki wajeh se usko sun na sakey hon.

Us shaks ne kaha, mai inpar izafa nahi karunga, ispar aitraaz hai keh isme nawafil ka inkar hai. Iska jawab yeh hai keh uski murad yeh thi keh mai in faraiz par zyadati nahi karunga yani 5 farz ki bajaye 6 farz nahi padhunga.

Neiz is hadith par yeh aitraaaz hota hai keh Nabi (sallallahu a’laihi wa sallam) ne us shaks ke mutalliq farmaya, agar usne sach kaha toh yeh kamyab hogaya. Halanke usne wajibaat ada karne ka kaha tha aur na haram kaamon se ijtinaab ka kaha tha toh unke bagair uski falah kaise hosakti hai? Iska jawab yeh hai keh hadith saheeh bukhari ke aakhir mein 6956 par bhi darj hai. Isme yeh jumla hai. Toh usko RasoolALLAH ne sharaa e Islam ki khabar di. Aur sharaa e Islam mein tamam faraiz wa wajibaat aur tamam muharrimaat bhi dakhil hain. Iske baad us shaks ne kaha: mai un cheezon mein koi zyadati karunga na kami, tab RasoolALLAH ne farmaya, agar us shaks ne sach kaha toh yeh falah paagaya. Aur zahir hai keh jo shaks tamam faraiz aur wajibaat par amal karey aur tamam muharrimaat aur makroohaat e tehrimi se ijtinaab karey, woh kamyabi payega yai jannati hoga.
