Superiority of Hazrat Umar Over Other Companions
It is narrated that Abu Sae’ed Al-Khudri said : The ALLAH’s Messenger said, “While I was sleeping I saw (in a dream) that some people were displayed before me and were wearing shirts, of which some were reaching up to the chest only, while others were even shorter than that. And ‘Umar bin Al-Khattãb was displayed before me wearing a (long) shirt which he was dragging.” The people asked, “What did you interpret from it? O ALLAH’s Messenger?”. The Prophet replied, “It is the religion.”

Discussion and Rulings from the Hadith
Meaning of the Hadith
One might interfere from this hadith that Umar bin Khattab is superior over all the other companions as well as Abu Bakr Siddique. But it is against the ijma (agreement of all Islamic scholars at all times). There is a clear Hadith e mutawatir on superiority of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique over all the other companions of the Prophet. It signifies the highest grade of Abu Bakr Siddique specifically over all other companions. The actual meaning of this hadith is Umar bin Khattab is superior to all other companions except Abu Bakr Siddique.
Objection
Few people object on this hadith that it is stated here that the shirt of Umar bin Khattab was longer than all the other companions. It might appear to people that his shirt was longer than Abu Bakr Siddique as well. So, his faith is also stronger than Abu Bakr. So, Umar bin khattab might be superior to Abu Bakr Siddique. Allama A’ini says that this hadith is different from the hadith in which the superiority of Abu Bakr Siddique was mentioned.
Some interpreters say, the long shirt of Umar bin Khattab represents that his good deeds are greater than Abu Bakr Siddique. But superiority is not just based on the amount and quantity. But the quality (feelings) matters in it. For example, the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed Haj only once after his obligatory Haj. If some person performs it for 50 times, do you think he will become superior to the Messenger of ALLAH? No. Likewise the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, one deed of Abu Bakr Siddique is superior to all deeds of Umar bin Khattab (radiallahu a’nhuma).
Inferences from the Hadith
The following are the inferences from the Hadith
- The believers are superior to each other based on their deeds.
- In this hadith, there is an evidence for superiority of Umar.
- Dream interpretation should be known from an ALLAH-fearing, sincere Islamic scholar.
- It is legal for an islamic scholar to state the significance and outstanding qualities of his student so that people become aware of it and try to become like him.
Umar e Farooq ki Fazilat
Imam Bukhari riwayat karte hain keh hamein Mohammad bin U’baidillah ne hadith bayan ki, inhone kaha hamein Ibrahim bin Sa’ad ne az Saleh az Ibne Shihaab az Abu Amama bin Sahal yeh hadith bayan ki keh Hazrat Abu Sae’ed Khudri (radiallahu a’nhu) yeh kehte the keh RasoolALLAH (ﷺ) ne farmaya, jis waqt mai soya huwa tha, toh maine khwab mein dekha keh log mere saamne paish kiye jarahe hain aur sab par kurta pehne huwe hain. Aur baaz ka kurta seene tak hai aur baaz ka ussay kam hain. Aur mere samne Umar bin khattab paish kiye gaye aur unpar aisi qamees thi jisko woh ghaseet rahe the. Sahaba ne pucha “Ya RasoolALLAH! Aap ne iski kya tabeer li hai? Aap ne farmaya, deen. (Sahih Muslim, Sunan Tirmidi, Sunan Nisayi)

Hadith mazkoor ke mubaahes aur masaail
Hadith ki taujiya
Is hadith se ba-zahir maloom hota hai keh Hazrat Umar Farooq (radiallahu a’nhu) tamam sahaba hatta keh Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique se bhi afzal hon. Yeh Ahle sunnat ke ijmaa aqeeday ke khilaf bhi hai aur iska koi qayil bhi nahi. Magar Hazrat Siddiqu e Akbar ki tamam sahaba par fazeelat mutlaqan ahaadith mutawatir se sabit hai. Is liye woh ahaadith iski mukhassas hai. Aur murad yeh hai keh Hazrat Abu Bakr siddique ke siwa aur sab logon se Hazrat Farooq e A’zam ka deen zaid hai aur woh un logon se afzal hain.
Aitraaz
Is hadith par yeh aitraaz hota hai keh isme mazkoor hai keh tamam sahaba mein Hazrat Umar ki qamees lambi thi. Isse bazahir lazim lagta hai keh Hazrat Umar ki qamees Hazrat Abu Bakr se bhi lambi thi. So unka deen bhi Hazrat Abu Bakr se zaid huwa. Aur isse Hazrat Umar ki Hazrat Abu Bakr par fazeelat lazim aati ho. A’llama A’ini ne iska yeh jawab diya hai keh yeh hadith un ahaadith se mua’ariz hai jinme Hazrat Abu Bakr ki afzaliyat bayan ki gayi hai. A’lawa az yen Hazrat Abu Bakr ki afzaliyat par ijma hai aur woh daleel e qatayi hai aur yeh hadith daleel e Zanni hai.
Mufassir kehte hain keh Hazrat Umar ki qamees lambi hone se yeh laazim aayega keh unke neik aamaal Hazrat Abu Bakr se zyada hain lekin fazeelat mein qeemat aur miqdar ka lihaz nahi hota. Kaifiyat ka aitbaar hota hai masalan RasoolALLAH (ﷺ) ne farziyyat e Haj ke baad ek baar haj kiya hai. Aur kisi shaks ne 50 haj kiye hon toh kya woh shaks RasoolALLAH se afzal hojayega? Nahi. Isi liye RasoolALLAH ne farmaya keh Abu Bakr ki toh ek neiki Umar ke tamam neikiyon se afzal hai.
Masail
