Surah Baqarah Verse 17 & 18 Explanation

First Example with respect to Hypocrites Tafsir

Ibn e Jarir writes: It is stated by Qatadah that when a hypocrite says the kalma i.e “Laa ilaha illallah” it illuminates him in the world. He secures his wealth and life from Muslims (soldiers in country of Islamic law), gains the benefits of obligatory, voluntary charities, marries among Muslims and becomes their heir. And when he dies, all the Islamic benefits will come to an end on him because he was not a Muslim at his heart.

Allah Almighty says “Left them in darkness where nothing is seen

Zulmaat means that (darkness) which stops one from seeing. There are various darkness for hypocrites. Darkness of infidelity, Darkness of hypocrisy and Darkness of the day of judgement when the light of believers will be shining in front and besides the believers and there will be darkness in-front of hypocrites. Or, it also means the darkness of misguidance, the darkness of ALLAH’s anger and never-ending punishment.

In this verse Allah Almighty mentions the example of those to whom Allah gave some kind of guidance and they destroyed it and did not attain Paradise. The hypocrites are also included in the commonness of this verse as they merely said with their tongue that, “ALLAH is the only one God, Mohammad (peace be upon him) is his messenger” but destroyed their faith because of keeping the infidelity in their hearts and reconciling with their devils which was explained in the previous verses.

This verse is also applicable to those who become a follower of the faith first, then turned away from it. And it also includes those who entered the stage of abandoning selfish desires, being happy with the will of ALLAH, and later on became a self claimant of lover of ALLAH and lost his light.

Allah Almighty says: They are deaf, dumb and blind so they shall not return (towards guidance)

That is, they are deaf to hearing the truth (the commands of Allah and the Messenger), they do not listen to the Quran.

Dumb to speak truth, their tongue do not glorify the praises of ALLAH and his messenger Mohammad (peace be upon him).

And blind to seeing the truth, they do not perceive the Signs (miracles) of ALLAH.

Allah Almighty has given the ears so that one should hear the truth. And has given the tongue to glorify his praises i.e., to speak truth. And eyes to see his miracles. If a person does not does so, then instead of having his eyes, ears and tongue, he is referred to as dumb, deaf and blind. It is for this reason that ALLAH refers to living non-believers as dead and slain believer martyrs as alive.

Furthermore, we also learn that, it is impossible for the enemies of the Prophet to follow the path of guidance because they have chose wrong path over the guidance of the Prophet. So, they are not to return towards right path.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 17 & 18 Roman Urdu

Surah Baqarah Ayat 17, 18 Tarjuma

[Surah Baqarah Verse 17]

[Surah Baqarah Verse 18]

Unki halat (e nifaq) un shaks ki halat jaisi hai jisne (andhere mein) aag roshan ki aur aag ne jab uske ird gird sab cheezon ko raushan kardiya (aur woh dekhne laga aur khaufanaak cheezon se apne aap ko mamoon karliya) toh ALLAH ne unki raushni salb karli aur unko andhere mein chod diya keh kuch daikhte (samajhte nahi, raste ke baare mein mutahayyir aur khaayif rehte hain). Ayat 17

(bilkul yehi haal in munafiqeen ka hai keh zuban se toh kalma, imaan zahir kar rahe hain magar marne par a’zaab wa khauf saamne aayega, yeh log haq se) Behre hain (keh usko qubuliyat ke kaan se nahi sunte aur har neik baat se) gonge hain (keh usko nahi kehsakte) aur (raah e hidayat se) andhe hain (keh isko dekhte nahi hain) toh ab yeh (is gumrahi se) wapas nahi hosakte. ”  # Ayat 18

Al Baqarah Ayat 17, 18 Tashreeh

Munafiqeen ke ahwaal ki pehli misaal

A’llama Ibn e Jarir likhte hain:

Qatadah ne bayan kiya hai keh jab munafiq “Laa ilaha illallah” kehta hai toh uske liye dunya mein roshni hojati hai. Woh musalmano (ke haakimo) se jaan wa maal ko mehfooz karta hai. Zakat, sadaqaat aur maal e ghanimat ke fawaid hasil karta hai aur musalmano mein nikah karta hai aur unka waaris hota hai. Aur jab uski maut aati hai toh Islam ke tamam samaraat aur fawaaid khatam hojate hain kyunke woh dil se musalman na tha.

Zulmat us cheez ko kehte hain, jo dekhne se mana karti hai.

Is aayat ke u’moom mein woh log bhi dakhil hain, jo imaan laane ke baad murtad hogaye aur is ayat mein woh bhi dakhil hain jo maqam e iraadat (yeh ah’waal saalik ki ibtida hai jisse nafsani khwahishon ko tark karta hai, raazi ba raza e ilahi rehta hai toh ispar noore ilahi ka faizan hota hai) par faaiz hote hain aur isse aglay maqam, maqam e mohabbat ka dawa kar baithte hain toh maqam e iraadat ka noor bhi jata rehta hai.

ALLAH ta’ala ne kaan isliye diye hain keh woh haq ko sunein, toh jisne haq ko nahi suna, woh khwa kaan rakhta ho ALLAH ke nazdeek behra hai. Aur zuban kalma haq bolnay ke liye di hai, toh jisne kalma e haq nahi bola woh khwa zuban rakhta ho, woh ALLAH ke nazdeek gongay hain. Aur jisne haq ko nahi dekha woh khwa aankhein rakhta ho, woh ALLAH ke nazdeek andha hai. Yeh log ab is hidayat ki taraf nahi lautenge jisko zaya karchuke hain aur us gumrahi ko tark nahi karenge jisko ikhtiyar kar chuke hain.

Yeh misaal ki pehli qism un munafiqeen ki hai, jo khoob dil kholkar munafiqana aur kafirana karwaayiyan karte the, na unki zuban haq ke liye taqat goya thi aur na kaam quwwate shanwayi aur na aankhein yaraaye binayi. Bilkul yeh unki fitri noore hidayat is zulumat(andhera) e kasab(kaam) se tabdeel hogaya hai. Ab unki wapasi ki koi ummeed nahi.
