Surah Baqarah Verse 14, 15, 16 Transliteration

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ [Surah Baqarah Verse 14]
ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِى طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ  [Surah Baqarah Verse 15]
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَٰرَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهْتَدِينَ [Surah Baqarah Verse 16]

“Wa idhaa laqulladheena aamanoo qalooo aamannaa. Wa idhaa Khalau ilaa shayaaTeenihim qalooo innaa maa’kum innamaa nah’nu mustahzioon. # Verse 14

ALLAHU yastahziubihim wa yamudduhum fee TuGhyaanihim yaa’mahoon. # Verse 15

UlaaikalladheenashtarawuD-Dualalata bil hudaa. Famaa rabih’at-tijaaratuhum wa maa kaanoo muhtadeen.”  # Verse 16

Surah Baqarah Verse 14, 15, 16 Translation

And when they meet believers, they say “We believe”, and when they are alone with their devils, they say: “Surely we are with you, we are only mocking at them“. # Al Baqarah Verse 14

ALLAH mocks at them (befitting his dignity) and leaves them to wander about in their transgression. # Al Baqarah Verse 15

They are those people who purchased error for guidance but their trade earned them no profit, and surely they did not know the right path of guidance. # Al Baqarah Verse 16

Surah Baqarah Verse 14, 15, 16 Tafsir

Revelation

It is reported that A’bdullah bin Abi and his friends saw that the Companions were coming towards them. He said to his people, “Look, How will I return these fools away from you”.

When Abu Bakr, Omar Farooq, and Ali Murtaza (Radiallahu a’nhum) came to A’bdullah bin Abi and said, “You and your group should be sincere with us.” In response, he said, “Welcome Shaykh Abu Bakr Siddique, Omar Farooq, and Ali the cousin brother of the Prophet. On this, Imam Ali said, “Fear ALLAH and leave hypocrisy.” He said, “I am saying this because I am also a real believer like you.” Then he said to his friends, “You should follow the same course I adopted.” Appreciating this, they said, “Why not?” As long as you are alive, we cannot face any harm. In this regard, these Quranic verses were revealed. And since they were often businessmen, so they were explained in their language of trade.

Explanation

When they are alone with their devils

A’llama Abu Laith samar qandi writes devils refer to 5 tribes of the Jews. Ka’ab bin Ashraf in Madina, Abu Burdah Aslami in Banu salam, Abu Sauda in shaam, A’bdul daar jaheenah and A’uf bin maalik . Abu u’baida said, Everyone who is astray and rebellious is a devil.

Meaning of ALLAH mocks at them

A’llama Raaghib Asfahani said يَسْتَهْزِئُ refers to purposely making fun of others. If this term is used with Almighty ALLAH, it means he will punish the mockers. Allah Almighty gives them respite for a period of time, then suddenly grabs them with his punishment when they would not even have thought about it. It is said as يَسْتَهْزِئُ because the hypocrites were in a deception that they have fooled the Muslims successfully.

In spite of their disobedience and rebellion, they were enjoying the benefits of Muslim laws and their were not punished. But in reality Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) knew about their hypocrisy and in the Hereafter they will be treated as mockery.

Imam Ibnul Manzar narrated from Abu Saaleh that it would be said to the inmates of hell to come out of hell and the doors will be opened. When they see the open gates of Hell, they will rush towards the doors and the muslim believers would be sitting on their thrones in Paradise and observing the scene And when the unbelievers approach the gates, the gates will be closed and the believers shall laugh at them, as the Qur’an says:

So today (on the Day of Resurrection) the believers laugh at the unbelievers. (A’Ali Shan), sitting on Thrones (of Dignity) they will command (a sight) (of all things. Did the unbelievers not the receive for what they did?  # Surah Al-Mutaffifin, Ayat 34-36

Allah Almighty has described the punishment of the hypocrites as mocking. It is not a joke in reality, but the situation is mentioned as a kind of mockery.

“And the recompense of evil is its similitude“.

But their trade did not profit them

Here, trade does not refer to real buying or selling products. That is to say, they chose to go astray in place of guidance. In front of them was the Holy Quran and the Holy Prophet’s guidelines, and in its opposition were the temporary benefits of Jews . But instead of accepting guidance, they chose to go astray. In this trade of their’s, their wealth was also lost and the ability of accepting the guidance and right path was also lost. So their trade did not profit them.

Surah Baqarah Ayat 14, 15, 16 Tarjuma

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا۟ إِلَىٰ شَيَٰطِينِهِمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِءُونَ [Surah Baqarah Verse 14]
ٱللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِى طُغْيَٰنِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ  [Surah Baqarah Verse 15]
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلضَّلَٰلَةَ بِٱلْهُدَىٰ فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَٰرَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُهْتَدِينَ [Surah Baqarah Verse 16]

“Yeh log jab musalmano se milte hain toh kehte hain keh hum imaan le aaaye hain. Aur jab tanhayiyon mein jaate hain aur apne shayateen (shareer sardaro) ke paas (wapas) pohunchte hain toh kehne lagte hain keh bila shuba hum tumhare saath (hum mazhab) hain. In musalmano se (izhar e imaan karke) hum toh sirf dil lagi kar rahe the. ALLAH hi unke saath istehzaa ka muamla farma raha hai (Yani unke istehzaa ka saza dega), aur unko dheel diye jaraha hai (yani unko mohlat deraha hai) unki sarkashi (aur had e kufr ki taraf tajawuz karne) mein keh woh hairan wa sargardaan phir rahe hain. Yehi woh log hain jinho ne gumrahi ko hidayat ke badle khareeda hai. Lekin unki is tijarat ne unko koi nafa nahi diya (yani yeh us tijarat mein kamyaab nahi huwe balke khasara mein rahe keh abadi jahannum unka thikana) aur is (karobar) mein theek tareeqe par nahi chale.”  # Ayat 11

Shaan e Nuzool

Riwayat hai keh A’bdullah bin Abi aur uske saathiyon ne dekha keh sahaba e kiraam unki taraf aarahe hain. Usne apni qaum se kaha, dekho mai un bewaqoofon ko kis tarah tumse wapas karta hun.

Jab Hazrat Abu Bakr, Umar Farooq, Ali murtuza (radiallahu an’hum) A’bdullah bin Abi ki taraf mutawajja huwe aur farmaya keh tum aur tumhare fuqahaa ko hamare saath mukhlisana rehna chahiye. Jawab mein usne kaha keh Marhaba ho shaikh Siddique, Umar Farooq, A’li bin a’mm ur Rasool ke liye. Is par Hazrat Ali ne irshad farmaya keh Khuda se dar aur nifaaq chod de. Usne kaha mai yeh baat isi liye toh keh raha hun keh mai bhi tumhari tarah momin hun. Iske baad apne ahbaab se kehne laga keh tum bhi yehi rosh ikhtiyar karo jo maine ikhtiyar kiya tha. Ispar khushaamadion ne tareef karte huwe kaha keh kyun nahi? Aap jab tak zinda hain hum par aanch nahi aasakti. Is silsile mein in aayaat ka nuzool huwa chunke yeh log aksar karobari the isliye unko tijarat ki misaal se samjhaya gaya.

Tashreeh

Jab yeh apne shayateen se khalwat mein milte hain

A’llama Abu Laith samar qandi se likha hai keh shayateen se murad yahood ke 5 qabeele hain. Ka’ab bin Ashraf madina mein, Abu Burdah Aslami Banu salam mein, Abu Sauda shaam mein, A’bdul daar jaheenah mein se aur a’uf bin maalik banu asad se. Abu u’baida ne kaha, har woh shaks jo gumrah aur sarkash ho shaitan hai.

ALLAH ta’ala ke istehzaa ki taujiyyah

A’llama Raghib Asfahaani ne kaha hai keh qasdan mazaq udhane ko istehzaa kehte hain. Aur istehzaa ki ALLAH ki taraf nisbat ho toh uska mana istihzaa ki jaza dena hai. Yani ALLAH ta’ala unko ek muddat tak mohlat deta hai, phir achanak unko apni giraft mein le leta hai. Isko istihzaa isliye farmaya hai keh munafiqeen is dhoke mein the keh woh musalmano ko bewaqoof banane mein kamyab hogaye hain. Kyunke unke nifaaq aur sarkashi ke bawajud unpar musalmano ke ahkaam jaari kiye gaye aur unse muaakhaza nahi kiya gaya. Lekin haqeeqat mein ALLAH aur uske Rasool (sallallahu a’laihi wa sallam) ko inke nifaq ka ilm tha aur aakhirat mein inke saath istihzaa kiya jayega.

Imam Ibnul Manzar ne Abu Saaleh se riwayat kiya hai keh dozakh mein dozakhiyon se kaha jayega ke dozakh se nikalo aur dozakh ke darwaze khol diye jayenge. Jab woh dozakh ke khule huwe darwaze dekhenge toh woh dozakh se nikalne ke liye bhagenge aur momin jannat mein apne takhton par baithe huwe yeh manzar dekhrahe honge. Aur jab kuffar darwazon ke qareeb pohunchenge toh woh darwaze band hojayenge aur momin unpar hansenge, jaisa keh Quran e majeed mein hai:

Toh aaj (qayamat ke din) imaan wale kafiron par hanste hain. (A’ali shaan) takhton par baithe huwe daikhte hain keh kafiron ko unke kiye huwe kaamo ka kya badla mila hai. # Surah Mutaffifeen ayat 34-36

ALLAH ta’ala ne munafiqeen ke istehzaa ki jaza (saza) ko istehza suratan farmaya hai. Haqeeqat mein yeh istehza nahi hai, uski nazeer yeh aayat hai:

“Aur burayi ka badla usi ki misl burayi hai”.

Lekin unki is tijarat ne unko koi nafa nahi diya

Is jagah khareed o farokht ka haqeeqi mana murad nahi hai, mazaji mana murad hai. Matlab yeh hai keh inhone hidayat ke muqabalay mein gumrahi ko ikhtiyar karliya. Unke saamne Quraan e kareem aur RasoolALLAH ki peshkarda hidayat bhi thi aur uske muqabalay mein yahudiyyat ke a’arzi munafey bhi the. Lekin inhone hidayat ke badle mein gumrahi ko ikhtiyar karliya. Is tijarat mein unka raasul maal bhi zaaya hogaya aur unke fitrat mein hidayat ko qubool karne ki jo istedaad aur salahiyyat thi woh bhi zaaye hogayi.
