What is Tanween?
Tanween is nothing but addition of noon sakina which is termed as nunation in english. Tanween, besides its distinct pronunciation from vowel symbols, it also has its uniqueness in terms of grammar as well as meaning. There are three different types of Arabic Nunations:
- Fatahataan (2 Fatahs)
- Kasrataan (2 Kasrahs)
- Dammataan (2 Dammas)
Grammatical Significance of Tanween
Tanween is usually added to the end of Arabic nouns, adjectives, and adverbs. It is a well known fact that in a language, an adjective or noun may be either definite or indefinite. And tanween is an indefinite marker of nouns and adjectives.
For example, كِتَابًا means “A book”. And Al-Kitab means “The Book”.
Sometimes ‘ا ‘or ‘ی ‘is shown after two Zabar [Fathatayn], do not pronounce it during spelling because it is silent there.
The examples of Tanween should be spelled out as follows
ط do paish Tuun, ط do zer Tuin, ط do zabar Tuan.
