The mother of faithful believers Ayesha (ALLAH be pleased with her) narrated that “The commencement of the (Divine) revelation to Allah’s Messenger (Peace be upon him) was in the form of good righteous true dreams which came true like bright daylight. And then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. He used to go in isolation in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (ALLAH Alone) continuously for many nights before returning to (or wanting to see) his family. He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then go back to Khadija (ALLAH be pleased with her) to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira’. The angel came to him and asked him to read. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) replied, “I am not reading”. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ added, “Then the angel hold me (embraced) and pressed me forcefully that I felt stiffness. He then released me and again asked me to read and I replied, “I am not reading”. Thereupon he hold me again and pressed me a second time till I felt the hardness. He then released me and again asked me to read but again I replied, “I am not reading”. Thereupon he hold me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, ‘Read in the Name of your Lord, Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Gracious. Then Allah’s Messenger returned with the Revelation and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija daughter of Khuwalid and said, “Cover me! Cover me!”. They covered the Prophet (peace be upon him) till his fear was ended and after that, he told Khadija everything that had happened (and said), “I am afraid something might happen to me.” Khadija replied, “Never! By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations with your kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones.” Khadija (ALLAH be pleased with her), then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin ‘Abdul ‘Uzza, who, during the Period of Ignorance became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters. He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allah wished him to write. He was an aged man and had lost his eyesight. Khadija said to Waraqa, “Listen to (the story of) your nephew, O my cousin!” Waraqa asked, “O my nephew! What have you seen?” Allah’s Messenger described whatever he had seen. Waraqa said, “This is the same one [who keeps the secrets i.e., the angel Jibreel] whom Allah had sent to Musa (Peace be upon him). I wish I were young and could survive up to the time when your people would turn you out.” Allah’s Messenger asked, “Will they drive me out?” Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, “Anyone who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility, and if I should remain alive till that day then I would support you strongly.” But after a few days Waraqa left this world and the Divine Revelation was also paused for a while.” [Sahih Bukhari, Volume 1, Book 1 – The Book of Revelation, Chapter 3, Hadith no. 3]
In this hadith, it is mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I am afraid something might happen to me”. One of the dignified Scholars Ibn e Jauzi Matoofi writes on its interpretation as – The Prophet feared in the beginning that whatever he is observing is from a devil (Satan) because sometimes falsehood becomes suspicious with the truth. The Prophet (Peace be upon) used to continuously search for evidence. He used to ask for evidence until everything became clear.
In the way, it is necessary on every one of us to know about the truthfulness of religion brought to us and ponder on the miracles shown as the evidence of truth, it is compulsory on the Messengers to examine whether the one who has been sent is an angel or a devil (satan)? The efforts put by the Prophets in differentiating between the truth and falsehood are much much higher than the scholars. That is why the status of ALLAH’s messenger is much higher than all other people.
Few people translate it as “I do not know how to read”. This translation is not suitable for the Prophet and the context. While translating, one should always choose the good meaning of the sentence. It is used as a proverb in the Arabic language so instead of taking its literal meaning, it is translated as ” I am not reading”. And this even fit’s with the context of hadith since the angel said to read three times. If the Prophet ﷺ did not knew to read, the angel would not have asked him to read again and again. The Prophet ﷺ was deeply immersed in the remembrance and worship of ALLAH. It is the state where there is none between the Prophet ﷺ and his Lord. The angel used to press forcefully to bring the Prophet out from this state and get his concentration towards him. But when he used to ask the Prophet just to read, he said I will not. The third time when the angel asked to read in the name of your Lord, the Prophet read it.

RasoolAllah ﷺ par sab se pehle wahi ki jo ibdeta ki gayi woh neend mein dikhaye huwe sache khwab the. Aap jo bhi khwab daikhte the raushan subah ki misl uski tabeer aajati thi. Phir apki taraf tanhayi ki mohabbat dali gayi. Aap Gaar e Hira tanhayi mein jaate aur ghar lautne se pehle wahan kayin kayin raatein ibadat karte. Aap wahan qiyaam ke liye khane ki cheeze lejate the. Phir aap Hazrat Khadija ke paas wapas aate toh phir aap usi tarah khane ki cheezein le jaate hatta ke aap ke paas wahi aagayi. Us waqt aap Gaare hira mein the. Aap ke paas farishta aaya usne kaha padhiye. Aap ne farmaya mai nahi padhne wala. Aap farmate hain pas usne mujhe pakda aur itne zor se bhencha keh muje intehayi mushaqqat huwi. Phir usne muje chod diya aur kaha padhiye. Maine kaha mai nahi padhne wala. Pas usne mujhe pakda aur teesri baar itni zor se mujhe bhencha keh muje intehayi mushaqqat huwi. Phir usne muje chod diya phir kaha “Ay Rasool e Mukarram, apne Rab ke naam se padhiye jisne apko paida kiya. Jame huwe khoon se paida kiya. Padhiye aur apka rab sabse zyada kareem hai.” Aap Sallallahu a’laihi wa sallam in aayat ke saath is haal mein ghar laute keh aap ka dil kapkapa raha tha. Aap Khadija binte Khwalid radiallahu a’nhu ke paas aaye aur farmaya Mujhe chadar Udhao, muje chadar udhao. Pas unhone apko chadar udhadi hatta keh jab apka khauf door hogaya toh apne Hazrat Khadija (radiallahu a’nha) ko is waqiya ki khabar di aur farmaya: Mujhe apne nafs par khatra hai. Hazrat Khadija ne kaha hargiz nahi, ALLAH ki kasam, ALLAH apko kabhi sharminda nahi karega, aap rishtedaro se meil jol rakhte hain, ghareebon ka bojh uthate hain, nadaaron ke liye kamate hain, mehman nawazi karte hain aur Raah e Haq mein paish aane wali mushkilaat mein madad karte hain. Phir Hazrat Khadija apko legayin hatta keh Warqah bin Nawfal bin Asad bin A’bdul U’zza ke paas pohunche jo Hazrat Khadija ke chahazad bhai the. Woh zamana jahiliyyat mein nasrani hogaye the. Woh Ibrani Zaban mein kitab likhte the. Chunanche woh injeel ko jitna ALLAH chahta Ibrani zaban mein likhte. Unki umar bohat hogayi thi aur nabeena hogaye the. Phir unse Hazrat Khadija (radiallahu a’nha) ne kaha Aye Chachazad bhai, apne bhatijje ki baat suniye. Aap se warqa ne kaha Aye Bhatije aap kya daikhte hain? Toh RasoolAllah ﷺ ne awwal se aakhir tak saara waqiya sunaya jise sunkar Warqa be-ikhtiyar bol uthe yeh toh wohi namoos (paigham dene wala farishta) hai jisko ALLAH ne hazrat Moosa a’laihissalam par nazil kiya tha. Kash mai us waqt jawan hota, kash mai us waqt zinda hota jab apki qaum nikalegi. Tab RasoolAllah ﷺ ne farmaya Kya woh mujhe nikalne wale hain? Warqa ne kaha Ji haan. Jo shaks bhi aap jaisa paigham le aaya usse a’dawat ki gayi hai. Mujhko us zamane ne paya toh mai apki qawi madad karunga. Uske baad warqa zyada din zinda na rahe. Unki wafat hogayi aur wahi nazil hona kuch waqt ke liye maukoof hogayi. [Sahih Bukhari, Jild 1, Kitab 1, Kitab Al Wahi, Baab 3, Hadith 3]
Is hadith mein hai Nabi (ﷺ ) ne farmaya mujhe apne nafs par khatra hai. Allama Ibne Jauzi Matoofi iski sharah mein likhte hain: Nabi ko ibteda mein yeh khauf hota tha keh jo kuch aap daikhte hain woh shaitan ki taraf se hai kyunke kabhi kabhi batil haq ke saath mushtaba hojata hai. Aur aap musalsal dalail ki talash karte rehte aur dalail ka suwal karte rehte yahan tak keh aap par sahih cheez wazey hogayi.
Aur jis tarah hum mein se kisi ek par wajib hai keh woh Rasool ke laaye huwe deen ke sidaq ko maloom kare aur mo’jzaat mein iske sidaq par jo dalail hain inpar gaur karein; isi tarah Rasoolon par yeh wajib hai keh inke paas jo ALLAH ka faristada aaya hai uske mutalliq tafteesh karein aaya woh farishta hai ya shaitan? Pas haq aur batil ki tameez mein inka ijtehad hamare ijtehad se kahin bade martabe ka hai. Isi wajeh se A’mbiya a’laihimussalam ka martaba hum se buland hai kyun keh woh humse badi aazmaish mein mubtala kiye gaye hain.
ما انا بقاریئ ka tarjama umuman yeh kiya jata hai keh mai padha huwa nahi hun lekin hamare mashaikh ne yeh tarjama karaya “Mai nahi padhta”. Neiz yeh tarjama muhawaraye arab ke mutabiq bhi hai keh yeh tarkeeb haal ya mustaqbil ke liye istemal karte hain. Jaisa keh fatah makkah se pehle Hazrat Abu Sufyan tajdeed e Sulah ke liye Madina tayyiba hazir huwe. Aur Hazrat Abu bakr siddique radiallahua’nhu ke paas pohunchkar unse darkhwast ki An Huzoor ki khidmat mein sifarish kardein toh hazrat Abu Bakar Siddique radiallahu a’nhu ne farmaya “ما اںا بفاعل” (Mai nahi karunga). Aur Quran e Majeed mein biradarane Yousuf ka Qaul hai “و ما انت بمؤمن لنا” (Aap hamara yaqeen nahi karenge).
Yeh mana hadith ke waqiah ke mutabiq bhi hai. Kyunke agar Nabi ﷺ padhna nahi jante toh hazrat Jibrael (A’laihissalam) unhe padhne ka mutalba nahi karte. Unhone sirf 1 baar nahi balke 3 baar dohraya. RasoolALLAH ﷺ ibadat mein itne mustaghraq the keh waha kisi ki gunjayish nahi aur is kaifiyat se bahar nikalne ke liye Hazrat Jibrael ne aap ko 3 baar dabocha aur kaha padhiye. Jab unhone sirf padhiye kaha tab Nabi ﷺ ne farmaya “Mai nahi Padhta” lekin jab unhone “Apne Rab ALLAH ke naam se padhiye” kaha, tab Aap ﷺ ne padha.
Ambiya a’laihimussalam ka khwab ALLAH ki taraf se hota hai aur sacha hota hai. Aur sharayi hujjat hota hai.
